The Launch of CU Denver Athletics
A look into the the rebranding of UCD Club Sports to Athletics
For decades, CU Denver has been known as an urban institution in the heart of downtown Denver, where students come to innovate, collaborate, and make their mark in one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities. But now, something new is rising on campus, something that promises to change the culture, amplify school pride, and give student-athletes a platform to shine.
CU Denver has officially launched its athletics program.
For student-athletes, the announcement is more than just the rebranding of club sports into athletics. It represents legitimacy. It’s a recognition that the Lynx identity extends far beyond the classroom, that athletic talent and academic ambition can thrive together, and that CU Denver students deserve the same opportunities to compete and be celebrated as peers at other universities.
From Clubs to Competition
CU Denver has long supported intramurals and club sports, with hundreds of students dedicating their time and talent to representing the Lynx in tournaments nationwide. Those efforts have built community and pride, but they often existed in the shadows, seen by teammates and close friends, but rarely spotlighted across campus.
With the launch of CU Denver Athletics, that changes. Student-athletes will now compete under the CU Denver name with official recognition, creating moments for the entire university to rally around.
“Playing for CU Denver has always meant a lot to me, but now it feels real,” said James Hermance, a player for the men's basketball team. “It’s exciting to know that when we step onto the court, we’re representing our school in a way that everyone can see and celebrate.”
Building Legitimacy for Student-Athletes
The new athletics program ensures that CU Denver student-athletes are more than participants in extracurriculars, they are leaders and ambassadors for the university. The program provides structure, visibility, and support that elevate their experience: official competition opportunities, exclusive gear only available to student athletes, and a platform to showcase their skills to the broader community.
It’s a shift that helps redefine what it means to be an athlete for CU Denver.
Uniting the Campus and Community
The ripple effects go far beyond the athletes themselves. Athletics has always been about more than wins and losses, it’s about pride, tradition, and connection. With games, matches, and competitions on the horizon, students, faculty, alumni, and the Denver community will have new reasons to come together, wearing black and gold and cheering as one.
“CU Denver is already a vibrant place, but athletics gives us something new to gather around,” said Christian Holmsen - Senior Coordinator of Comeptitive Sports. “It’s about creating moments that everyone, athletes and non-athletes alike, will remember as part of their CU Denver experience.”
Looking Ahead
The launch of CU Denver Athletics is just the beginning. The vision includes expanding programs, building rivalries, and creating traditions that will define what it means to be a Lynx for years to come.
For now, though, the milestone is clear: CU Denver has taken a historic step, giving its student-athletes the legitimacy they’ve long deserved and giving the university community a new way to connect and celebrate.
The future of CU Denver isn’t just in classrooms and labs, it’s on the courts, fields, and arenas where Lynx athletes are ready to compete. And the roar is only getting louder.
